Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

An employee is responsible for performing various tasks to aid daily operations at any construction or project site. Duties include but not limited to loading and unloading tools or materials, other pieces of equipment, digging trenches, filling in pits, cleaning, preparing work sites, compacting earth and backfilling holes, assisting skilled tradespeople in their duties. Job functions are subject to change from day to day depending on project requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.)

 Following instructions from supervisors.

 Able to drive safely on dirt roads and maintain a clean driver’s record

 Clean and maintain company canal system (checks, dams, canals, trash racks, etc.)

 Clean and maintain company roads and laterals.

 Operate equipment as needed (see operator job description)

QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Experience is preferred but not necessary as we do on the job training. 

CERTIFICATES, DRIVERS LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Class D driver’s license with a clean driving record. 

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Ability to operate vehicles safely. It will be primarily along paved surface streets, with some driving on unimproved, graveled, or dirt canal roads. Occasional operating of vehicles and mechanical equipment up to and including trucks, dump trucks, crew truck, backhoes, and other equipment as certifications and licensing requirements allow. Large fleet vehicles require documenting the inspection into the daily inspection book. Ability to drive equipment (dependent on certification & licensing requirements) is preferred but not necessary

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words, recognize similarities and differences between words and series of numbers. Print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform simple math equations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with varying situations.

SAFETY

Must be able to understand, observe, and follow company and DOT safety protocols around worksites, company yards, and mechanized equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, water trucks, etc. at all times.  Employee must understand how to properly use safety equipment and gear as required by worksite. May need to attend periodic safety meetings.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands and fingers, handling, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, verbally or visually communicate, hear, and required to walk.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include near and far vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Employees are regularly exposed to moving mechanical equipment/parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions.  Outside weather conditions include frequent sunshine and occasional rain, wind and/or cold or hot weather, wet and/or mud, risk of electrical shock, and irritants.  The work environment varies frequently in location and type; however, most always is around water.
